The Empty Plane
Also known as the Grey Plane, the Empty Plane was a liminal space of pure grey, with occasional wisps of white and black. It was inaccessible to life or objects, unless it was perturbed. By certain forms of magic (such as Abjurmancy), and by scientific methods (lead by the Destrian Laboratory of Spatial Research), pockets within the empty plane could be opened.
Pocket dimensions and demiplanes were openings within the empty plane, which were used to store objects or be used as rooms. Certain magical devices like greyboxes and the The Pack of Snack utilized pocket dimensions in the empty plane for storage.
Laws of the Empty Plane #
The lowest energy state of the Empty Plane was an empty gray void. Whenever possible, it would revert to that form.
When a space within the Empty Plane was made, it was not stable. It was, by default, an excited energy state that would decay back to nothingness. However, certain configurations within the empty plane were locally stable, and could exist indefinitely so long as it was not disturbed.
Should a demiplane made in the Empty Plane close with objects inside of it, it would not delete these objects. Instead, it would merely conform to the tightest form factor around these objects. Surprisingly, the force with which the Empty Plane would close in on itself was not intense; insomuch as the inertia was. If a small disruption closed around a smaller object, it would not be crushed. This is how an apple could be stored within a Greybox. However, when a massive ballroom in a demiplane becomes unstable, the closing force accelerates into a rush that could crush an individual, not to mention an apple being served on the table's silver platter.
Inventions Involving the Empty Plane #
The Empty Plane had been used for storage for hundreds of years, but limitations involving the stability of space within it made storage units limited and non-reusable. A classic extraplanar storage device would blow up a "bubble" within the empty plane when it is first created. The objects of storage are quickly moved into the bubble for storage, and eventually the bubble would gently collapse around the items. This would disallow the addition of new items into the storage device while allowing existing items within to be taken out with ease.
Phaendar of Destral developed ways of creating stable structures within the Empty Plane, going so far as to create living spaces and other similar large chambers. Theodore Perry developed smaller forms of this technology parallel to Phaendar, leading to the creation of the Greybox storage vessel technology.
Notable Spaces in The Empty Plane #
- Phaendar Hironimus Draft built himself a grand home inside of the Empty Plane, before a failed experiment caused cascading instabilities that damaged a great deal of it.
- Under Phaendar's tutelage, Theodore Perry built himself a workshop within the Empty Plane.
