Umbramancy

A brother arcane path to Shadowmancy, umbramancy was a potent form of magic created when a shadowmancer formed a serious pact with the Shadeking. The raw amount of power granted through this arcane path was astronomical and was only pursued by a rare couple of individuals in all of Legerian history.

Cultivation #

Umbramancy was not a well-documented arcane path due to its extreme rarity. However, its fundamentals were identical to Shadowmancy, sharing in the same archon (kahgu).

A shadowmancer could become an umbramancer by requesting an audience with the Shadeking. This was a difficult process with dire consequences and a steep cost.

  1. A duel with one of His Darkness' Elite Shades was the first order of business. This was the only way for someone to gain an audience with the Shadeking. Losing such a duel would result in expulsion from Shadowkeep, effectively stripping the shadowmancer of their art.
  2. Once an audience was granted, the Shadeking would challenge the prospective umbramancer with a riddle. Failure to solve the riddle resulted in explusion.
  3. Once the riddle was solved, the Shadeking would request a final thing: something abstract and intangible in the material world. Typically, memories or knowledge. For example, the famous umbramancer Yao Thumying gave up his memories of his family as tribute to His Darkness.

An umbramancer gained access to a portion of the Shadowkeep's magic directly, essentially sharing a small portion of the Shadeking's own power. An umbramancer's shadows roared with ember-like speckles of golden light when tapping into this deeper form of kahgun casting, echoing the regal power that the Shadeking held.

Powers #

While shadowmancy's focus was on the ability to call forth living shadows to serve as minions, umbramancy focuses on utilizing darkness in more potent, destructive ways. Umbramancy granted true umbrakinesis, allowing the caster to form whatever objects he or she desired out of shadow. Umbramancers could create nearly anything they wanted out of shadows.

An umbramancer still had access to the abilities of a shadowmancer, but those were enhanced by a vastly expanded capacity of dark favour and supplemented by an assortment of exclusive powers.
