Stoff
The stoff were short, fuzzy creatures that were native to the otherwise barren, frozen, empty plains north of the Phayu Wing Mountain Range. Stoffs resembled minute bears, but with a squashed, flatter face. Adult stoffs reached only to the knee of the average humanoid, and it was this size that caused them to remain elusive--at least on the surface.
Stoffs' thick fuzz allowed them to stay warm in the otherwise chilly north, but they spent most of their lives in warmer caves or burrows that they dug out of the permafrost using their claws. Their clawed fingers, complete with an opposable thumb on each hand, were obfuscated by their thick fur, often making it seem like stoffs had nothing but fuzzy orbs at the end of their arms.
Intelligence #
Stoff were quite intelligent--while not on the same level of intelligence as semi-sapient organisms like dragons, stoffs were easily one of the more intelligent forms of wildlife on Legere. Stoff homes could have items like rocks and old tools collected by them to be used as decorations. It wasn’t above stoffs to use tools as well--while their surprisingly sharp teeth and claws were effective weapons, travelers moving to and from Attitah occasionally recalled stories of being beat on the ankles by stick-wielding stoff.
There has been a debate for the longest time whether or not stoffs should be considered animals or sapient--people. However, many attempts to communicate at a higher level with the tiny fluff balls have resulted in only minor success.
Stoff Species #
There were two stoff species: the white-furred plains stoff, and the brown or black-furred mountain stoff.
Exploitation #
Stoffs were hunted by various people and sold as pets because of their cute appearance and entertaining mannerisms. Sadly, stoffs would commonly develop depression and often die prematurely when kept on leashes or cages.
