Smogfish
A fat, slow-moving fish found in Axehead Bay and the waters surrounding the ashen south of Phovezila. While rather unappetizing to look at, smogfish were one of the main catches that sustained Icthy’s Rest’s economy.
Smogfish were covered in silvery scales and had a set of fins that seemed almost comically too small. Their fins were often darkened thanks to swimming through volcanic ash. Their gills were exceptionally good at filtering out ash from the water, allowing them to live unperturbed by the presence of such volcanic activity. Smogfish had four eyes, two facing sideways, and two facing forwards, granting smogfish an wide field of view. This helped them avoid predators in the otherwise murky waters.
The most unique aspect of smogfish was their active defense mechanism. Smogfish would actively scoop up ash and soot, swallowing it into a specialized organ called the sootsac. The sootsac stored this ash until the smogfish consciously dispelled it in a manner akin to flatulence. This sooty explusion left behind a thick cloud capable of choking out predators long enough for the smogfish to escape.
